What this list covers

Playing chess for free in Oslo mostly means a club or community evening that charges nothing. Groruddalen sjakklubb plays free at Romsås without sign-up; Sentrum Sjakklubb has held free tournaments at Grønland Boulebar with a beginners' group beside a FIDE-rated one; Dragen Sjakklubb's Thursday evenings at Norges Toppidrettsgymnas are free for members of federation clubs; Vestby and the Dragulf clubs run free evenings for young players.

Outdoors, Olafiagangen had free summer chess for children in 2025, and Vaterlandsparken a free drop-in with chess sets to borrow in August 2024. At The Good Knight the Monday blitz has no entry fee, but a purchase at the bar is expected.
